Priests have “the rewarding and consoling task of incarnating mercy, as Jesus did”, Pope Francis said this morning in his homily at the Chrism Mass, attended by thousands of clergy.
At the Chrism Mass in dioceses throughout the world, bishops bless the sacred oils used during the Easter Vigil and in liturgical celebrations throughout the year.
Jesus does not fight to build power, Francis said, but “to open the flood gates of that mercy which, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, he wants to pour out upon our world.”
God’s mercy is especially visible, he added, at moments of encounter. “Mercy restores everything; it restores dignity to each person. This is why effusive gratitude is the proper response,” he said.
It was also visible in moments of forgiveness, “which shames us while also giving us dignity.”
